Hazardous Waste Requirements - The Basics
Maintaining compliance with environmental regulations is a critical component of workplace safety and operational success. On Wednesday, April 15, Amber Hicks, an Environmental Specialist with the Ohio EPA’s Small Business Environmental Assistance Program (SBEAP), will join the Wooster Area Safety Council to provide a regulatory overview of hazardous waste requirements. This session will cover essential basics including waste characterization, generator categories, and specific rules regarding universal waste and used oil. Attendees will gain a "behind-the-scenes" look at the most frequently cited violations and receive practical resources to help their businesses manage hazardous waste more effectively. With extensive experience as both a hazardous waste and air pollution inspector, Amber focuses on making complex rules approachable and manageable for the business community.
Speaker Bio: Amber Hicks is an Environmental Specialist at the Ohio EPA in the small business environmental assistance program (SBEAP) in the Division of Environmental Response and Revitalization. SBEAP is a non-regulatory program within the Ohio EPA which provides free and confidential assistance to businesses focusing on the needs of small businesses.
Amber’s current role focuses specifically on hazardous waste. She helps businesses understand and meet regulatory requirements, making complex rules more approachable and manageable.
Before this, Amber held several positions within the Ohio EPA. She worked as a multi-media environmental specialist in SBEAP, covering hazardous waste, air pollution, and surface water. She also served as a hazardous waste inspector in the Bowling Green District Office, and as an air pollution inspector in the Columbus District Office.
Amber earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Biology from Middle Tennessee State University. Before joining the Ohio EPA, she worked in two national parks—Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland and Haleakalā National Park in Hawaii.
